India's natural rubber output in January rose 6% on year to 97,500 metric tons due to good weather conditions in the major growing state of Kerala, a senior official with the state-run Rubber Board said Thursday.
"Last January, tapping had been affected because of adverse wet weather conditions. But this year, the weather has been conducive for tapping," said the official, who didn't wish to be named.
Tapping of rubber is usually avoided when the tree trunk is wet.
However, production during the April-January period fell 5% to 729,250 tons due to lower output early in the marketing year, said the official.
The board expects India's natural rubber production to total 840,000 tons for the marketing year ending March 31. The country produced 864,500 tons of rubber in 2008-09.
Consumption during January rose 24% on year to 79,800 tons, while ending stocks as of Jan. 31 stood at 287,965, up 20%, the official said.
The tire sector consumes about 60% of the total natural rubber produced in India.
Imports of natural rubber during January grew at a slower pace of 27% to 6,553 tons compared with a 43% on-year rise in December.
The growth in imports slowed in January due to high international prices of the commodity, said the official.
The country's imports during the April-January period totaled 146,653 tons, up sharply from 68,605 tons a year earlier, he said.
Meanwhile, exports of natural rubber during January jumped 68% to 2,480 tons, while shipments during the 10-month period fell to 12,912 tons from 42,707 tons a year earlier, the official added.
