Card for Malaysian Smallholders

1 April 2010 - Malaysian rubber smallholders must use the Smallholders Sales Registration Card to sell their produce beginning April this year.

A report by Bernama, the Malaysian National News Agency, quoted the Malaysian Minister for Plantation Industries and Commodities, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok saying that the card, which was issued free, was to overcome frequent theft of rubber. With the card, the Malaysian Rubber Board will know who sells and if the source was valid.

He also said rubber traders were only allowed to buy rubber from card holders and enforcement, including suspension of licences, would be carried out on traders who bought stolen rubber or from individual who did not have a card.

The card will be officially launched in April before the introduction of the programme to the smallholders for registration and for the providing of information. About 4,000 cards had been issued to smallholders in a pioneer programme last year.
