Fujian imports 35,700 tons of natural rubber in Q1

Apr. 16, 2010 (China Knowledge) - Fujian Province's import volume of natural rubber for the first quarter of this year surged 32.4% year on year, hitting 35,700 tons, 35,400 tons of which were imported from countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, 31.4% more than in the same period of last year, according to Fuzhou Customs.

The average import price was US$2,166 per ton, 69.9% higher than in the same quarter of 2009.

During the period from January to March, Fujian's import volume of natural rubber from Thailand hit 27,700 tons, increasing 43.2% year on year and accounting for 77.6% of the total. Imports from Indonesia reached 5,800 tons, an amount 5.3 times the amount imported in the same period of last year.

An officer of Fuzhou Customs said that higher rubber prices were principally due to China's strong automobile sales and to a long draught that resulted in low rubber output in Southwest China, sources reported.
