The introduction of small-holder rubber planting scheme to the people here has borne tremendous results as the participants are now able to earn better income, said Jabu who is also Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture and also Minister of Rural Development.
“Those who are involved in the scheme by planting between four to 10 hectares of rubber now could earn a monthly income of between RM5,000 to RM7,000 and even more for those who have bigger estates.
“By planting rubber, the participants are able to upgrade themselves from a middle income economy category to a higher income economy if they are serious in involving themselves taking heed of the government’s advice,” he added.
Jabu said with the introduction of new technology and biotechnology by the Rubber Research Institute (RRI), farmers, especially small holders who participated in the schemes could have high quality clone of rubber seedlings to plant.
According to him, this high quality cloned rubber seedlings would only take about four years or more to produce between 2,400 to 3,400 kg of latex per hectare.
He said this yesterday when he visited and attended a briefing at Guangken Rubber Processing Factory located at Debak near here.
Soon after his arrival, Jabu was briefed by the General Manager of Guangken Rubber Processing Factory Liu Pei Lin and his assistant Li Hua Wei.
According to Liu, the factory started its operation on Nov 14, 2009, employing 13 staff members who were from China and another 100 locals.
He was also briefed on the progress of the factory.
The Deputy Chief Minister said he was impressed and very happy to note that the people from Betong had responded very well by planting rubber trees as their source of income.
Jabu said the federal and state governments were trying their best in many ways to help the rural people to upgrade their standard of living and to bring them out of the clutch of poverty.
At the moment there were about 16,000 hectares of high yield rubber being planted in various areas in Saratok, Sarikei and around Sri Aman, he stressed.
However the size would increase soon due to the tremendous response from farmers all over the state including those from the upper Baram, he added.
Jabu said in April, the project to be implemented in upper Baram would start with the help of the Rubber Planting Board which had set up their mini nursery at Long Bruan in Baram.
Among those present were Deputy State Secretary Datu Ose Murang, Bukit Saban assemblyman Robert Lawson Chuat, Telang Usan assemblyman Lihan Jok and Betong Resident Datu Romie Sigan Danie l as well as John Loo, the Director of steering committee of NKRA Agriculture sector and several heads of government departments as well as local community leaders.
