Sales of new motor vehicles in Malaysia, Southeast Asia's biggest passenger car market, rose 33% from a year earlier in January, the Malaysian Automotive Association said Monday.
Sales rose to 50,622 units from 38,107 units a year earlier, the association said in a statement.
"Market situation and consumer sentiment was very much more favorable (in January) compared to a year ago when the global economic downturn set in," the association said.
Several new car models launched recently also boosted sales, it added.
Sales of new vehicles in February are likely to be lower than January's due to the Lunar New Year holidays making for a shorter working month.
January's sales were 6.2% higher than December's, the association said.
